GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SAFARIS

A DAY ON THE ROAD

The sun will set the pace of our days. With the first rays of light and after a magnificent breakfast, we will begin our route. Some days we will do a “game drive” (slow driving through the parks and reserves in search of animals), while on others we will continue our way to the next destination. Throughout the day, the 4×4 will be relaxed, with stops to observe animals, admire landscapes, interact with the local culture, visit points of interest or simply stretch our legs.

At midday we will take a break for lunch and, in the afternoon, we will do another “game drive” or continue the journey to the next destination for a well-deserved rest, dinner and the opportunity to enjoy a mythical sunset.

HEALTH

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory in Kenya. Please remember to bring your international vaccination certificate. Non-mandatory but recommended vaccinations include typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio). Preventive treatment against malaria is essential. For more information, please contact the Foreign Health Services in your community.

Due to the possible presence of parasites such as bilharcia in the waters of Lake Victoria, Lilac Safari does not recommend swimming in them.

FEEDING

Food during the trip will be rich, plentiful and varied. In the camping option, a cook will accompany the group and bring the necessary food. Breakfast will be varied and generous, with coffee, milk, eggs, bacon, butter, jam, cereals and fruit. Meals will be light, with options such as sandwiches, pasta salads and fruit. For dinner, vegetables, soups, pasta, meat and fish will be offered.

In the hotel or lodge option, breakfast and dinner will be served in the establishment’s restaurant, while meals will consist of picnic boxes. Only bottled water is included as a drink during the trip.

VISAS

If you are flying to Kenya, you need to obtain a visa, which you can apply for online at www.ecitizen.go.ke. In Tanzania, it is also mandatory, and we recommend applying for it online at https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/. Although you can also apply for it upon arrival in the country, this process is often cumbersome due to bureaucratic controls and long queues, which can take up to 2 hours.

To complete the online application, you will need to have a scanned passport-size photo, a scanned copy of your passport, and your plane ticket.

PERSONAL TRAVEL EQUIPMENT

The gear should be minimal, carrying only the essentials:

  • Comfortable and lightweight clothing: avoid dark colors like black or navy blue to prevent attracting tsetse flies. It cools down at night, so wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts.
  • Warm clothing: an appropriate set for the cold (fleece or light jacket) since mornings in Nairobi and Ngorongoro are chilly.
  • Comfortable footwear: sneakers or sandals.
  • Mosquito repellent with DEET.
  • Accessories: hat or cap, sunglasses, swimsuit.
  • Raincoat for brief showers.
  • Binoculars and camera.
  • Spare glasses if you wear glasses or contact lenses.
  • Basic first aid kit with personal medications.
  • Sunscreen and lip balm.
  • Small backpack for personal items.
  • Wet wipes useful for dust.

Important note: Tanzania bans plastic bags. Avoid them in luggage and hand luggage to prevent fines or legal issues. Leave plastic bags on the plane before disembarking.

TIPS

In Africa, tipping is a form of gratitude, and local staff (driver and/or cook in case of camping) expect extra compensation for a job well done at the end of the tour.

Tipping is voluntary and based on what you consider appropriate for the services received.

CLIMATE

During the summer months, daytime temperatures will range between 25-30ºC and nighttime temperatures between 15-20ºC. It is essential to bring a change of warm clothing for the camping area in Ngorongoro, where temperatures can drop to 5ºC due to its altitude of over 2000 metres.

CURRENCY

In Kenya, the Kenyan shilling is used, and in Tanzania, the Tanzanian shilling. It is recommended to exchange some money into the local currency when you arrive, as this will be more convenient and you will get a better exchange rate for small purchases, such as souvenirs or drinks.

In larger cities and accommodations, both dollars and euros are accepted, and there are also ATMs. Many hotels accept credit cards. If you bring dollars for payments, they must be from 2009 or later, as earlier ones are not accepted in either country.
